An Irish national suspected of making antisemitic threats against an Australian Jewish couple in a supermarket in Avignon was apprehended and taken into custody on Wednesday 26 August, according to France Info, which cites concordant sources confirming information from Agence France-Presse.
The incidents date back to mid-August. In the video circulated on social media, the man is heard shouting "Come back Hitler" before threatening one member of the couple that he would "put a bullet in their head". The sequence was viewed by more than 11 million people.
The investigation was entrusted to the gendarmes of the Marseille research section and the Avignon research brigade.
In mid-August, ministers Serge Papin, in charge of Commerce and Tourism, and Aurore Bergé, in charge of combating discrimination, jointly condemned "in the strongest possible terms" these "antisemitic threats".
