On 1 July, in the afternoon, a 48-year-old woman died during an operation conducted by police forces in the south-east of the French capital. The public prosecutor immediately ordered an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of this death.
It was the victim's former partner who raised the alarm. He contacted the authorities to report the concerning behaviour of the woman, whom he described as experiencing a dementia crisis. The woman had been living in the basement of a gastronomic establishment run by the brother of her former partner since their separation approximately two weeks earlier. She had just left a psychiatric unit and regularly consumed methamphetamine-type narcotics.
When officers arrived at the scene, the woman in her forties took refuge in the cellar. A police officer went down after her. It was then that the situation escalated: the woman allegedly attacked the officer with a butcher's blade. The police officer first used her electric-shock weapon. Her colleague, standing beside her, then fired several times. Eight cartridge cases were found in the stairwell.
Despite emergency services intervention, death was confirmed at the scene. The assaulted officer was slightly injured, according to information from the prefecture.
Two separate proceedings have been launched. The first, for violence causing death, is being handled by the IGPN. The second, for attempted murder of a person carrying out a public service mission, has been assigned to the 2nd DPJ.
