Appeal of former Badaroux dentist condemned for mutilations
José Pereira Mendes, a 61-year-old former dentist based in Badaroux (Lozère), has appealed his conviction pronounced on 7 May by the criminal court of Mende, according to France Info. A new trial will take place in September before the appeals court of Nîmes, in the Gard.
In the first instance, the court had found him guilty of all the charges against him. Between 2018 and 2021, he had extracted approximately one hundred healthy teeth before placing implants on several dozen patients, without any proven therapeutic necessity. The court also convicted him of massive fraud against the social security system.
The sentence handed down amounted to six years in prison. The court furthermore ordered a permanent ban on practising as a dentist, as well as a permanent ban from French territory for this man of Portuguese nationality.
During the first instance trial, a victim had stated: "It was more like butchery than medicine." The court had identified 45 victims in the case.
