Gendarmes in the Landes have arrested a 49-year-old man following the death of his partner, a woman in her sixties aged 61, who died on Thursday at Mont-de-Marsan hospital. A forensic medical examination revealed multiple traces of brutality on the body of the deceased.
According to prosecutor Alexa Dubourg, the autopsy revealed several contusions distributed across the body, indicating signs of recurring abuse. A subdural haematoma and cerebral haemorrhage were also found. Preliminary investigations suggest that the couple had argued the day before the tragedy, and that the man had struck the woman at least twice in the face.
Following his police custody, the suspect was presented to an investigating judge. He now faces charges of fatal violence against a spouse and for recurring violence within the couple. The judge ordered his remand in custody pending the continuation of proceedings.
The individual's criminal record is serious: between 2008 and 2022, he was convicted three times of violence against a partner. His record also includes several driving offences.
This new domestic tragedy comes in an alarming national context. Official statistics published in autumn showed an 11 per cent rise in conjugal femicides between 2023 and 2024, bringing the toll to 107 victims.
