Two police officers were injured on Sunday 24 May in Le Mans, Sarthe, during an intervention that escalated into a knife attack, France Info reports from police sources. The man in question, struck by gunfire discharged by officers, was hospitalised in serious condition around 2 p.m.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. Officers had attended the scene following reports that a man was throwing objects out of a building window. Upon opening the door, the individual wounded one of the police officers with a knife. His colleagues then discharged their firearms. The man subsequently barricaded himself in the flat before eventually being attended to and hospitalised.
The exact nature of the second police officer's injuries is not known at this stage, according to the same police source. The severity of injuries sustained by the two officers has also not been specified.
Two investigations opened by the Le Mans public prosecutor's office
The public prosecutor for Le Mans, Carine Halley, announced to the Agence Radio France the opening of two separate investigations. The first concerns the attack on police officers by the individual armed with knives as well as the injuries inflicted on the officers. The second concerns the use of firearms by law enforcement.
"The criminal investigation police in Angers have been given charge of these two investigations, which should establish with precision the motives and circumstances of the commission of the facts," Carine Halley specified.
