The head of the French government called on Friday for an intensification of crackdowns against drug networks, arguing that the measures currently being considered lacked ambition. This position came during the first inter-ministerial meeting devoted to crime, in a context of rising homicides linked to the drug trade, according to 20 Minutes.
Sébastien Lecornu expressed a wish for a change in scale in the response. According to his entourage, the phenomenon has evolved both in its nature and in its proportions. The occupant of Matignon described the suggestions put forward by the Interior and Justice ministers as technical and ill-suited. He announced that his office would be directly involved in this matter, arguing that it could not rest solely on the shoulders of Laurent Nuñez and Gérald Darmanin.
Twelve government members were summoned to the table, including those holding the portfolios for Education, Foreign Affairs, Labour and the government spokesperson. The Minister of National Education presented a survey of the repercussions in educational establishments. A further inter-ministerial meeting is to be held shortly according to a revised methodology.
The executive now intends to mobilise the entire government apparatus to combat traffickers. This determination follows urgent meetings organised at the presidential palace. The Interior Minister has been advocating for several weeks for a more comprehensive approach, asserting that this fight could not be waged by his department alone.
Since the beginning of the year, a series of bloody disputes has marked the national territory. Investigators are noting growing participation of minors, both as victims and perpetrators. Competent services have highlighted the profound transformations of organised crime: globalisation of networks, recourse to digital tools, rejuvenation of recruits and disinhibition of violent behaviour.
