The Paris Court of Appeal confirmed on Tuesday the ban on Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, from running for public office. The sentence amounts to forty-five months, of which thirty are suspended, which could jeopardise her candidacy for the 2027 presidential election.
The political leader arrived at the courthouse located on the Île de la Cité a few minutes before the hearing began. She refrained from making any immediate comment after the decision was delivered, although she had planned to speak on television in the evening regarding her political future.
The magistrates examined the appeal filed by Le Pen and her collaborators against the judgment handed down at first instance in the case of fictitious jobs for parliamentary assistants. In 2025, the court had established that activists from the former National Front—now renamed the National Rally—had paid assistants at the European Parliament who actually carried out activities for the party in France, in violation of the regulations of the Brussels institution.
Even before the debate began, French and foreign journalists had gathered in front of the courthouse, alongside supporters of the National Rally.
In the days preceding the verdict, Le Pen had already announced that in the event of a candidacy ban, she would support the candidacy of the party president, Jordan Bardella, aged thirty, whom she described as a politician with her "energy, conviction and great confidence".
