French justice delivered its appeal decision on Tuesday in the National Front parliamentary assistants case. Marine Le Pen has received a sentence of three years in prison, one year of which is a custodial sentence convertible to electronic surveillance. The sentence includes forty-five months of ineligibility, thirty of which are suspended, as well as a financial penalty of 100,000 euros.
This legal case concerns the alleged fictitious employment of European parliamentary assistants between 2004 and 2016. The European Parliament had denounced a system consisting of remunerating staff members who would actually work for the party rather than for elected officials within the Strasbourg chamber.
The appeal court verdict comes as the 2027 presidential election deadline approaches. The criminal conviction could affect the candidacy of the far-right leader, although the ineligibility measure is not immediately enforceable in the absence of a purely custodial sentence.
