The Paris court has found the French far-right leader Marine Le Pen guilty in a case of systematic misappropriation of funds from the European Parliament. She has been sentenced to wear an electronic surveillance bracelet for a period of one year.
Despite the conviction handed down on the morning of Tuesday 7 July, the 57-year-old politician announced on the same evening that she would run in the 2027 French presidential election. Marine Le Pen, who has already been a candidate on three previous occasions, stated during a television interview following a meeting of her party "National Rally" that she would appeal the decision before the Court of Cassation.
"I will campaign without a bracelet, I will be a presidential candidate, I am certain that the Court of Cassation will overturn the decision concerning the bracelet," she declared.
This development marks an unprecedented election campaign: Marine Le Pen could solicit votes whilst under electronic surveillance. The case concerns the illegal use of European Parliament funds for party purposes.
