Marine Le Pen remains ineligible: appeals court upholds ruling
The Paris appeals court confirmed on Tuesday Marine Le Pen's conviction for misappropriation of European funds. The ruling upholds the five-year ineligibility that prevents her from standing in the 2027 presidential election.
At first instance the previous year, the far-right leader had been found guilty of misusing European Union funds. She had then been sentenced to a fine of several million euros, a custodial sentence with a suspended execution, and this loss of her electoral civic rights. She had appealed.
The appeals court's decision came faster than expected, in the courtroom where Marine Le Pen appeared shortly after 1:15 p.m., saying nothing to reporters who had been waiting outside the courthouse since daybreak.
