The investigation into the assassination of Mehdi Kessaci has expanded with four new charges being brought, bringing to eleven the number of people indicted in this organised crime case.

The investigation into the homicide of Mehdi Kessaci, which occurred in Marseille, has seen a new development with the charging of four additional individuals. The National Anti-Organised Crime Prosecution Office (Pnaco) released this information on Tuesday 7 July.
These four defendants — three men and one woman aged between 20 and 25 — are being prosecuted for assassination and attempted assassination committed by a structured group, as well as for membership of a criminal association. They were remanded in custody following their arrest the previous week.
This new development brings to eleven the total number of individuals implicated in this case. Six of them had already been charged at the end of March, and a seventh in May.
The investigations attribute this murder to the DZ Mafia, a Marseille clan active in drug trafficking. Investigators established that the perpetrators had targeted the wrong person: their original target was Amine Kessaci, the victim's younger brother and a prominent activist.
The city of Marseille is suffering a wave of gang violence linked to drug trafficking that has already caused the death of 17 people in the course of 2025, according to official data.
