A 67-year-old psychiatrist lost his life on Monday following a knife attack that occurred in his medical facility located in Gosier, Guadeloupe. The incident took place during morning consultations. The office of prosecutor Caroline Calbo, magistrate at Pointe-à-Pitre, confirmed the facts reported by 20 Minutes.
The medical profession was struck with shock. The deceased worked within a unit dedicated to mental health disorders, which also includes a short-term hospitalisation facility. Colleagues present at the scene attempted to save the doctor, but his injuries proved too severe. According to information gathered from people familiar with the case, the assailant is said to have inflicted several fatal blows.
Law enforcement officers quickly arrested a suspect, who is believed to be a patient being treated by the facility. Initial investigation findings suggest that this individual had not displayed any alarming behaviour prior to this tragedy. Around ten medical staff members were present in the premises at the time of the incident; they received psychological support given how traumatic the scene was.
This death occurs in an environment marked by significant insecurity. With approximately 7.5 murders per 100,000 residents, the homicide rate in the archipelago far exceeds the average figure observed in mainland France, which is around 1.2. Furthermore, the island's mental health facilities have seen an increase in attendance: approximately 12,400 people have been treated this year, representing a 22 per cent increase over five years and the equivalent of 3 per cent of the local population.
The investigation is continuing to establish the exact circumstances of this crime and to determine the motives of the alleged attacker.
