After the discovery of weapons and ammunition magazines in a car parked near a synagogue in Sarcelles, the Interior Ministry has asked prefects to step up surveillance of venues frequented by the Jewish community.

On Saturday 11 July, in the evening, law enforcement officers were alerted to a suspicious vehicle parked near a synagogue in Sarcelles (Val-d'Oise). Interior intelligence services feared that the car could be used to target the local Jewish community. Approximately three hundred people were evacuated from the neighbourhood.
Inspection of the vehicle revealed the presence of weapons and ammunition magazines. The National Counter-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (Pnat) took up the case and opened an investigation. At this stage, no arrests have been made, the Pnat clarified on Monday 13 July.
Shortly afterwards, the Interior Minister sent a telegram to all prefects, which franceinfo was able to consult. He asks them to intensify protective measures around establishments and events likely to attract large audiences. At sites deemed most vulnerable, military personnel from Operation Sentinelle will be mobilised as reinforcements. Mayors are also invited to activate municipal police forces and video surveillance networks.
