The accused is known as one of the alleged accomplices of Mohamed Amra during his escape at the Incarville toll booth in May 2024. The proceedings are expected to continue until 11 September, in a context of high security.
The allegations date back to September 2020, in Évreux. According to a police source, Preira allegedly killed a young man of Chechen origin at the end of a brawl. He disappeared the same evening as the murder and was not arrested until January 2022, in Spain, on a European arrest warrant.
The accused denies the allegations. He was identified by a witness and traced via telephone records, but no DNA trace definitively identifies him, according to the same source. However, the DNA and fingerprints of Mohamed Amra were found in the vehicle used by Preira during his fugitive period.
Originally from Évreux, Jean-Charles Preira is "unquestionably part of the upper echelon of organised crime", according to a judicial source. His name has appeared in several cases related to serious criminal activity in recent years. In 2023, he was sentenced at the assizes to seven years in prison for the robbery of a cigarette transport truck in Évreux in 2018.
He is furthermore under investigation for having participated, from his cell, in the organisation of the escape of drug trafficker Mohamed Amra at the Incarville toll booth — a commando-style attack that took place in May 2024.
