According to france3-regions.franceinfo.fr, a 52-year-old woman was found dead at her home in Valréas, in the Vaucluse, during the night of Saturday 15 August. An alert was raised at around 4 a.m. by one of her sons, who contacted the gendarmerie. Upon their arrival, the officers discovered the victim deceased.
The woman's son, aged 32, was arrested at 7:10 a.m. by the gendarmerie's surveillance and intervention squad. Placed in police custody on a charge of murder, he confessed to the facts alleged against him during questioning, according to Hélène Mourges, public prosecutor at the judicial court of Carpentras. A knife suspected of having been used during the incident was seized by investigators.
The Carpentras public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation for murder. The statement transmitted by the prosecutor further specifies that the suspect benefits from a judicial protection measure in the form of a guardianship order.
An autopsy is to be carried out on Tuesday 18 August in order to determine precisely the causes of death. The investigation, conducted under the summary procedure provisions, has been entrusted to the research section of Marseille and the research brigade of Orange.
