The Cayenne assize court delivered its verdict on Friday 5 June in the case of the murder of Alicia Faye, according to la1ere.franceinfo.fr. Four years after the events, three defendants were tried following five days of hearings.
Alicia Faye, originally from Bordeaux and aged 25, had been shot in the head in March 2021 in Cayenne, less than twenty-four hours after her arrival in French Guiana. She had been involved in a cocaine trafficking network between Gironde and French Guiana, transporting a substantial sum of money for this network.
Dane Langhorne, identified as the shooter and principal defendant, was found guilty of murder and theft. Tried in absentia due to his absence, he was sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment. The court followed the submissions of the Attorney-General, who had requested this sentence on the morning of the verdict. Langhorne is believed to be sheltering in Guyana and is the subject of an international arrest warrant. Should he be arrested, he could be retried.
Kildine Thiam, companion of Dane Langhorne at the time of the events, was also found guilty. The court sentenced her to 6 years' imprisonment accompanied by a committal order, incarcerating her at the end of the hearing. The sentence imposed exceeds the prosecution's submissions: the Attorney-General had sought 4 years without immediate incarceration.
Flaviano Makkai, the third defendant, was acquitted of the charge of murder. The Attorney-General herself had sought this acquittal, owing to insufficient evidence to establish his participation in the murder. His lawyer, Me Alexandre Thiriez, and the lawyer for Alicia Faye's family, Me Michaël Beulque, had pleaded to the same effect. This acquittal concerns only the murder charge: Makkai has already been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in the drugs trafficking aspect of the same case, a sentence against which he has appealed.
