Despite their denials, the four defendants were found guilty to varying degrees of participation in the violence or failure to prevent the crime.
Unequal sentences according to degree of involvement
Two of the defendants, tried in custody, were sentenced to 15 and 25 years in prison respectively. A third, currently at large, was also sentenced to 25 years in prison in absentia. The fourth received three years in prison, of which one year is without suspension, for "failure to prevent a crime", according to local radio Évasion, cited by rci.fm.
In-camera hearing and tensions at trial
The criminal court of Seine-et-Marne, composed exclusively of professional judges, ruled in camera due to the tense atmosphere that prevailed during the hearings. The case is not definitively closed: one of the convicted has announced his intention to appeal.
Family recalls Joey Albert's background
The family of the young man contested the theory of a mutual escalation of violence advanced during the trial. Joey Albert had been a volunteer firefighter and had worked as a public thoroughfare surveillance officer. According to information reported by Évasion, jealousy is believed to have been at the origin of the tensions that led to the tragedy in December 2021.
