Murder of Mehdi Kessaci: four new suspects detained, total rises to 11
The investigation into the murder of Mehdi Kessaci, the brother of a prominent figure in the anti-drug struggle, has led to the detention of four new suspects. They join seven other individuals already in custody.

Four additional people have been placed in pre-trial detention as part of the investigation into the murder of Mehdi Kessaci. The victim was the brother of Amine Kessaci, a figure known for his involvement in combating drug trafficking. The total number of suspects in custody now stands at eleven.
The four new suspects, three men and one woman aged 20 to 25, were arrested on 30 June. They already have prior convictions, with three of them currently detained for other matters, according to information from the anti-terrorism and organised crime prosecutor, speaking in a statement relayed by RTBF.
These individuals have been charged with "murder and attempted murder in an organised gang" as well as "participation in a criminal association with a view to preparing a crime". The investigation suggests that some played an active role in carrying out the acts, whilst others participated in the chain of command.
A first wave of arrests took place on 23 March 2026 in Marseille and in Hérault. At that time, ten people were arrested, six of whom were charged and remanded in custody. A seventh suspect was arrested on 18 May before also being incarcerated.
The national anti-terrorism and organised crime prosecution office (Pnaco) is coordinating the investigation. The lawyers of two of the new suspects declined to comment to the AFP.
