The lawyers for those accused in the Noahm case have disputed before the courts the theory that the crime was motivated by the victim's sexual orientation. They have also reproached the prosecution for giving in to external pressures of a political nature.
Noahm, a twenty-three-year-old man, was found dead on 1 June 2026 at his home in Saint-Brieuc, in Côtes-d'Armor. He had sustained numerous facial injuries. An autopsy revealed that he had died from head trauma. Two suspects have been placed in provisional detention in connection with the investigation.
During a hearing before the judge of freedoms and detention, the defence counsel vigorously contested the classification of a homophobic act adopted by the investigating magistrates. According to them, no conclusive evidence supports this hypothesis. They denounced what they characterised as political exploitation of this tragedy, arguing that the prosecution had been influenced by public statements from political figures.
The lawyers also raised questions about the solidity of the proceedings and the manner in which the judicial investigation had been directed. They requested the release of their clients, a request that was rejected by the magistrate.
The Noahm case has sparked strong public emotion and numerous political reactions, with certain political figures having denounced a hate crime targeting the homosexual community.
