Jogging death: a year without answers in Jouy-en-Josas
Raphaël Maciel, 38, was shot dead on 5 September 2025 whilst jogging near his home in Essonne. A year on, no suspect has been identified despite investigations.
Jogging murder: investigation stalls after a year
According to ladepeche.fr, a 38-year-old father of two, Raphaël Maciel, was shot in the back on 5 September 2025 whilst taking his regular jog in Jouy-en-Josas, Essonne. Wearing dark blue shorts and a long-sleeved grey t-shirt, he had ventured only a few hundred metres from his home when a gunshot rang out around 9 p.m. The man collapsed on the country path he used regularly.
His partner, Laura, was waiting for him that evening. "He was hesitant because his thigh was hurting a bit and he wanted to put our son to bed. So he said: 'I'm going to go for a run, but not for long'", she recalls. After around fifteen unanswered calls, she became worried. Accompanied by her father, she made her way to the path and caught sight of the emergency services' flashing lights. It was only the following day that she received confirmation: Raphaël was dead.
To date, more than a year after the incident, the murder investigation opened by the Évry-Courcouronnes public prosecutor's office has not resulted in the arrest of any suspect. An appeal for witnesses went unanswered. The hypothesis of a hunting accident is said to have been ruled out, but no other theory has been given priority.
Laura, 36, says she feels "abandoned". "I have no information, no access to the case file, nothing. My two children are being followed by psychologists, I am undergoing treatment and I need some answers so I can move forward. And because Raphaël deserves it", she said. Her lawyer, Maître Maxime Levin, is calling for investigative resources to be maintained: "Above all, we want the resources to be maintained. A year without answers is a very long time. The guilty party must pay".
The modus operandi continues to raise questions. A victim struck in the back whilst jogging suggests several scenarios: a settling of scores, a shooter who targeted the father of the family without knowing him, or an isolated act. However, the absence of any identified or priority lead leaves the family and investigators facing a dead end. A year without answers, the mystery surrounding Raphaël Maciel's death remains unsolved.
