Google News FR — Crime (fr) reports that while visiting Paris on Wednesday 26 August 2026, Montélimar mayor Julien Cornillet met Interior Minister Laurent Nunez to request the creation of an additional police unit attached to the city's police station.
The visit took place the day after a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday morning in the Nocaze district. A man in his forties was killed in the gunfire. Three suspects were arrested following the incident.
Cornillet made a "solemn appeal" to the minister to obtain reinforcements, specifically requesting the integration of a GSP — a community security group, a support unit operating on the ground in direct liaison with the local police station.
The mayor had furthermore already announced his intention to increase the local police force by 20 per cent in Montélimar, according to his latest public statements before the meeting at the ministry.
The town of Montélimar is facing a rise in security tensions, to which Cornillet, an independent right-wing elected official, intends to respond by strengthening human resources on the ground.
