Arrests in Nice following 17 October unrest
According to BFM TV, more than a dozen people were arrested on Saturday 17 October in Nice for looting shops, damaging public property or throwing projectiles at police forces. The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture confirmed these arrests following the mobilisations that descended into violence in the city.
Approximately 3,500 demonstrators travelled through the streets of Nice, among whom 150 "rioters" according to figures communicated by the prefecture. The latter formed "distinct masked and black-clad groups, highly mobile and hostile". On the Promenade des Anglais, riot police confronted groups armed with beach pebbles.
Several shops were targeted: JD Sport, Micromania, Décathlon and a Yamaha motorcycle shop were all looted. In the late afternoon, looting was still ongoing in the city centre. A municipal police vehicle parked unoccupied had its windows smashed.
Nice's video surveillance centre, which controls the city's surveillance cameras, was also attacked. According to the prefecture, a rioter was treated by firefighters after sustaining serious injuries whilst attempting to smash a shop window.
