A 37-year-old tenant is suspected of having set fire to his flat in the Pissevin neighbourhood of Nîmes on Friday 9 January, according to midilibre.fr. The incident took place on place Corot whilst police officers were simultaneously conducting a drugs control operation in the sector.
The man is believed to have started the fire to destroy the narcotics he was storing at his home, apparently alarmed by the presence of the police. The intervention of firefighters became necessary, but the fire was confined to only the suspect's flat.
Other residents of the building were evacuated. Nine people were "assessed by medical teams and their condition did not require hospitalisation", specified the Gard fire and rescue service (Sdis 30).
Once the fire was brought under control, police found remains of narcotics in the home of the man in question. The tenant, who had inhaled smoke, was transported to hospital. His state of health did not permit him to be placed in custody. He will be summoned at a later date by investigators. The investigation is continuing.
