Newborn abandoned in forest in Haut-Rhin: mother charged with attempted murder

A 19-year-old young woman was placed under investigation on Saturday for attempted homicide of a child under 15 years old. She is accused of leaving her newborn in a wooded area of Wittelsheim, in Haut-Rhin.

The child was found alive last Sunday in the Nonnenbruch area. A passer-by had observed the mother running out of the undergrowth, carrying a duvet and presenting traces of blood on her lower limbs. This person immediately alerted the gendarmes, who located the baby naked, placed on a blanket, with the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck.

The suspect, who lives with her parents, told investigators that she gave birth to the child alone in her bedroom that same day, taking care to make no noise. She had concealed her pregnancy from all the people around her, including the father. She indicated that she acted under the effect of panic, without intention of causing the child's death or abandoning it.
