A couple from northern France has been detained following the deaths of their twin babies, found lifeless in an overheated room, whilst four other children in the family were suffering from dehydration.

On Monday 29 June, a family tragedy shook the small municipality of Beuvrages, situated near Valenciennes. Emergency services were alerted in the middle of the day to intervene at a residence on rue Léonard-de-Vinci. Upon arrival, they found two infant twins, scarcely more than one year old, who had not survived, according to La Montagne.
In the same dwelling were four other children, aged between 3 and 6 years. They were quickly transported to a medical facility, all presenting significant fluid depletion. One of them, in critical condition, was evacuated by a medical helicopter which landed on a sports field near the home.
Initial investigators' findings indicated a room where the heat was particularly oppressive. The mother is said to have put her children to bed around 19:00 the previous evening and did not see them again until the following day, late in the morning.
The two parents, a 35-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, were placed in provisional detention for the purposes of the investigation. The magistrate in charge of the case specified that this couple had no prior judicial record and that the family unit had never been subject to social services monitoring.
Investigations are continuing under judicial proceedings for criminal negligence resulting in the death of minors. A post-mortem examination will need to establish with certainty the cause of death of the two young sisters.
