The Paris assize court sentenced Lakhdar M. to 27 years imprisonment on Friday. The 53-year-old man was tried for the murder of his wife Assia, committed in January 2023 in the 19th arrondissement of the capital.
The defendant admitted to strangling his companion, with whom he had lived for twenty-six years. He then cut up the body and scattered the remains in Buttes-Chaumont park. Despite these partial confessions, he has consistently denied intending to kill her, citing a dispute over a bag containing money as the triggering factor.
Over five days, the proceedings highlighted the mechanics of the femicide without fully illuminating the motivations of this "worker" with an apparently ordinary life. The general prosecutor had called for a sentence of 27 years the previous day, a sentence that the jurors followed. The murder was reclassified as aggravated by the marital relationship.
During the hearing, the man displayed an attitude of contrition. His downcast face and repentant remarks were not, however, sufficient to obscure the extreme violence of the acts committed. The cutting up and scattering of remains in a public space particularly struck observers.
