Officers opened fire on Wednesday in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, resulting in the death of a woman who had just attacked one of their colleagues with a blade.
The incident occurred when the individual inflicted knife wounds on a policewoman. The other officers present at the scene then responded by firing, which resulted in the death of the assailant.
The capital's prosecutor's office indicated on Thursday to news agency AFP that two parallel investigations had been opened. The first, for "violence resulting in death", was assigned to the IGPN, the police's internal control service. The second aims to establish responsibility for "attempted murder of a person holding public authority", in view of the assault suffered by the officer.
According to initial information transmitted to the magistrates, the deceased reportedly made broad movements with a butcher's blade before being neutralised. The investigation will need to clarify the exact sequence of events and the legitimacy of the use of firearms by law enforcement.
