The 67-year-old singer was arrested and placed in provisional detention on Monday, 8 June at around 8:30am, according to the Nanterre public prosecutor's office. He is currently being questioned at the Paris judicial police's first district. The artist is the subject of approximately ten statements from women accusing him of sexual assault and rape.
Investigators are looking into facts recently brought to their attention, grouped under the authority of the Nanterre public prosecutor's office. The accusations include notably an alleged attempted sexual assault in 1997 in Mexico, another attempted assault in 2000 in Monaco, two alleged sexual assaults in 2002 and 2003 by an employee of his record company, facts reported in Metz dating from 2008, as well as an alleged rape that occurred in 2012 at a film festival in Dinard.
The statement with constitution of civil party status filed by broadcaster Flavie Flament will not be examined in this questioning. The 2019 complaints linked to the so-called massage workers case, closed without further action at the end of 2020, as well as that of Ophélie Fajfer for facts that occurred in 2015 in the Vaucluse, will not be examined either. However, this latter case was recently reactivated despite an initial closure without further action in 2022.
The individual, who benefits from the presumption of innocence, categorically denies the facts he is accused of. His counsel, Christophe Ingrain, stated that his client has "never sought to impose sexual relations on anyone" and that he has "never ignored a refusal, never forced a gesture or sexual act".
The measure of deprivation of liberty may be extended for a maximum of two days, until Wednesday morning. After that deadline, he could be released or brought before the courts.
This case has already had repercussions on the artist's career. The final performances of the theatrical production in its run were cancelled. He also gave up the majority of his musical tour initially scheduled to begin in mid-June and left the Enfoirés troupe. His performances in Montreal were also cancelled.
