An 18-year-old has been sentenced to custody after striking a police officer whilst attempting to escape a traffic stop on an electric motorcycle in the suburbs of Toulouse.

A Toulouse court has imposed a one-year custodial sentence, with a remand in custody, on an 18-year-old man. This ruling was handed down on Friday at an immediate appearance hearing, following an incident that occurred on 13 June in Colomiers.
On that day, the defendant was with friends on board an electric motorcycle of the Sur-Ron type when two officers attempted to carry out a traffic stop. Reports of thefts of similar vehicles had been recorded in the area. The rider then decided to flee. A police officer stepped into his path with arms outstretched, shouting his affiliation to the forces of order. The young man accelerated and struck the officer.
The injured policeman, father of a 9-year-old boy, sustained injuries to his right arm and thumb, including a fracture and a ruptured tendon. He suffered two episodes of collapse en route to the emergency department. His professional capacities could be durably affected: doctors suggest a potential loss of nearly one third of the grip strength in his right hand, the one he uses to handle his regulation firearm.
During the hearing, the defendant denied having seen the officer or heard the order to stop. His defence, conducted by Me Ravyn Issa, argued that he was suffering from a state of shock following a personal tragedy: seven days before the incident, he had witnessed the death by firearm of a childhood friend in Seysses.
The prosecution requested a sentence of two and a half years, of which ten months with probation, as well as penalties for various breaches of road traffic law. The representative of the civil party, Me Stéphanie Pujol, stressed the severity of the violence committed with a vehicle. The court ultimately opted for two years' imprisonment of which twelve months custodial, the remainder being suspended subject to obligations regarding work, treatment and compensation. Added to this are a fine of 1,000 euros for traffic offences, a provision of 2,000 euros in favour of the victim, and a ban on possessing weapons for five years.
