Pedestrians struck in Caen: Chechen driver committed for trial for murders
A 26-year-old man, a Russian national of Chechen origin, has been committed for trial and remanded in custody after driving into pedestrians in Caen, killing two people and injuring nine others.

According to France Info, the man suspected of deliberately running down a group of pedestrians on Wednesday evening near Caen railway station (Calvados) has been committed for trial for murders and attempted murders. The driver, a Russian national of Chechen origin aged 26, has also been remanded in custody, announced the city's prosecutor, Joël Garrigue, on Saturday.
The tragedy caused the death of two people and left nine injured. The prosecution specified that the man resides in France in a regular situation and has never been convicted. He is not known to the intelligence services, and no elements of radicalisation or political nature have been found.
Prosecutor Garrigue formally ruled out "the hypothesis of a terrorist act". "All other hypotheses are currently being explored without favouring or confirming any of them," he had stated as early as Thursday evening. The investigation is continuing.
