Police in Dunkirk: a minor injured by a 4x4 and files complaint

Complaint from a minor following a police incident in Dunkirk

According to actu.fr, a 14-year-old minor filed a complaint on Friday after claiming to have been struck by a 4×4 belonging to the national police on 5 October 2026 in Dunkirk. As the vehicle was reversing, it allegedly came into contact with the young girl in the midst of a gathering of secondary school students. The incident did not result in a fall, according to prosecutor Charlotte Huet.

Dunkirk General Hospital noted a "minor contusion" to the hip during examination of the victim. The prosecutor requested a further medical-legal examination to verify the young girl's account. Investigations are continuing, including the search for witnesses and the exploitation of surveillance camera footage.

The Dunkirk public prosecutor's office opened a preliminary investigation on Thursday for "endangering others". The investigation was entrusted to the ethics and investigations unit of the zonal direction of the national police in Nord. An official from the Inter-Departmental Directorate of the National Police (DIPN) in Nord clarified on Wednesday that the use of the vehicle "does not correspond to the doctrines of use and the guidance given by the Ministry of the Interior".

When questioned before the Legal Affairs Commission of the National Assembly, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez indicated on Wednesday that "reminders" had been issued. The video of the incident was widely circulated on social media. The Human Rights League launched an appeal for witnesses with a view to potentially referring the matter to UN special rapporteurs, with its vice-president Emmanuelle Jourdan-Chartier describing the events as "extremely shocking" given the age of the young people involved.
