22-year-old police officer struck and killed on Nantes ring road
A young police adjunct of 22 years was fatally struck by a car during an intervention on the ring road of Nantes. He was pursuing suspects during an apprehension operation.
Death of a police adjunct on the ring road
According to TF1 Info, a police adjunct of 22 years lost his life during the night of Friday to Saturday in Nantes. Around 1am, at the Orvault gate on the inner ring road, a team of three police officers and a police adjunct from the Saint-Herblain police station intervened to apprehend individuals who had damaged a vehicle belonging to the Interdepartmental Roads Authority of the West.
Two suspects fled by crossing the ring road lanes. The officers pursued them on foot, positioning themselves behind protective barriers. The police adjunct then crossed the lanes and was struck by a motorist who was unconnected to the facts that motivated the intervention.
Unconscious at the time he was taken into care, the police officer had head injuries. Emergency responders administered cardiac massage for approximately forty-five minutes, without success. A doctor confirmed his death during the night.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez expressed Saturday morning his "immense emotion and profound sadness". "My thoughts go first to his family, to those close to him and to his colleagues at the Saint-Herblain police station who have been deeply affected by this tragedy," he wrote on X.
Laurent Hottiaux, prefect of Loire-Atlantique, expressed his "sincere condolences to the family and those close to the deceased officer" and associated himself "with the pain of his colleagues and all of the internal security forces."
An investigation was opened by the Nantes public prosecutor's office, with the Organised and Specialised Crime Division in charge of the investigation. Breathalyser and drugs tests carried out on the driver proved negative, according to a police source. The presumed perpetrators of the initial damage were apprehended after the accident.
