Inquiry into assault on police officer

According to TF1 Info, the Paris prosecutor's office opened an inquiry on Friday following the circulation on social media of videos showing a police officer being assaulted during protests linked to secondary school blockades. The inquiry concerns "assault in a group against a person holding public authority" and has been entrusted to the territorial security service.

A young trainee lieutenant from the police prefecture was pursued and thrown to the ground by several people in the 20th arrondissement. She reportedly received several kicks whilst attempting to retrieve a fallen radio. According to the prefecture, she also received death threats. The images were widely shared on social media.

The prefecture indicated that a complaint had been filed and assured the officer of "its full support". Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned the "unspeakable acts" and promised to "find and prosecute" those responsible. On Thursday, approximately 1,949 arrests took place during the blockades, while around a hundred police officers and gendarmes were reportedly injured during operations.
