On Monday, a 67-year-old psychiatrist was killed in his office at the medical-psychological centre in Gosier, on Grande-Terre. The following evening, a 48-year-old man was formally charged with murder and remanded in custody, announced Caroline Calbo, magistrate of Pointe-à-Pitre.
The alleged assailant admitted to the facts. He justified his actions by expressing resentment towards psychiatric medicine as a whole, as well as grievances related to the medications he had been prescribed, the prosecutor reported during a press conference at the Pointe-à-Pitre courthouse.
The tragedy occurred at the conclusion of a routine follow-up consultation. The patient then used a folding knife to strike repeatedly. The post-mortem examination revealed injuries affecting several vital organs; approximately ten blows were recorded.
Police officers from the BAC arrested the suspect shortly afterwards in the immediate vicinity of the treatment centre. The man had no criminal record, although a matter concerning the possession of a bladed weapon had involved him in 2021. That case had been dismissed due to criminal irresponsibility, and the person involved had then been admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Educated but currently without professional activity, according to a source close to the investigation.
An evaluation of his mental state will constitute a central element of the investigation. His medical file will be examined and several expert assessments will be conducted to establish whether he had full possession of his faculties at the time of the crime.
