A 49-year-old man, previously flagged by law enforcement, was shot dead on a terrace in Grenoble's city centre on Tuesday evening. The shooting erupted whilst the football match between France and Spain was in full swing.

According to initial information gathered by investigators, the man in his forties was on the outdoor seating area of a café located along Cours Jean-Jaurès, one of the main thoroughfares of the Alpine metropolis, when he was struck by gunfire. He did not survive his injuries.

This new case of armed violence comes against a backdrop of tensions between criminal groups that have destabilised the city for some time. Police and gendarmerie services have opened an investigation to shed light on this homicide and track down the shooters.
