A 32-year-old man was sentenced on Friday 21 August to three years imprisonment by the Perpignan criminal tribunal, France Info reported. The incident occurred on 9 August, when a chase with police officers resulted in five members of law enforcement being injured.
The incident: a flight that turned into a pile-up
On that day, police officers had attempted to stop the motorist near the Perpignan exhibition park. The driver refused to stop, triggering a pursuit. Officers had used a device to puncture the front tyres of the fleeing vehicle. Despite this, the driver continued before braking suddenly, causing a pile-up with the two police cars following him. Five police officers were injured in the collision.
Cocaine thrown from the window, then nine days on the run
Seizing the opportunity to flee on foot following the crash, the man disappeared. Shortly after, a witness handed over to police a bag containing 200 grammes of cocaine that the reckless driver had thrown from his vehicle's window during the chase. After nine days on the run, the suspect finally chose to turn himself in at Perpignan police station.
An already lengthy criminal record
The man appeared before the tribunal with a serious judicial history: eleven previous convictions, two of which had already been issued for refusing to stop. He had moreover been incarcerated twice, for periods of 18 and 36 months respectively.
