On 24 May, the lifeless body of Théo, 11, was discovered in woodland on the banks of the Vilaine, near Rennes, in north-west France. The child had a towel pulled tightly around his neck. An autopsy confirmed he had been strangled.
That Sunday, the boy had gone fishing. He was accompanied by a 16-year-old teenager he had only just met. Witnesses saw the pair flee the area shortly afterwards. The child's screams had alerted nearby residents, who called emergency services, but it was already too late.
The next day, Rennes police arrested the 16-year-old youth. The 15-year-old girl presented herself voluntarily at the police station. According to investigators, both suspects confessed to the crime.
The motive for the tragedy is reported to be revenge linked to the theft of fishing equipment. Young Théo is said to have stolen items worth a few dozen euros. To recover their property, the two teenagers are said to have committed the irreparable act. The child had apparently told his parents that the equipment had been given to him by the 16-year-old boy.
The two minors were placed in provisional detention. They could be prosecuted for murder of a minor.
