Fatal brawl in Metz: 19-year-old teenager in state of brain death
A 19-year-old boy has been hospitalised in a state of brain death following a brawl that broke out early on Saturday 30 May at Republic Square, in the heart of Metz, in the Moselle department. The incident involved two groups of young people who apparently did not know each other.
According to information gathered by police, the protagonists were gathered on this public square, listening to music, when the dispute escalated. Members of one of the two groups then targeted the teenager, striking him numerous times in the head. A 22-year-old companion who was attempting to protect him was also injured during the confrontation.
The most seriously injured victim was rushed to Mercy Hospital, located in Metz. Law enforcement officers arrested three people, whose ages range between 19 and 27 years old. They were taken to the local police station and were still being questioned on Sunday with the objective of shedding full light on the exact circumstances of this brawl.
Prosecutors from the Metz public prosecutor's office specified that the images captured by surveillance cameras in the area would be analysed. For the time being, investigators have not found evidence of weapons being used during the events.
