Tonkin storage unit: drugs, revolver and cash seized, two arrests in Villeurbanne
Google News FR — Crime (fr) reports that a surveillance operation carried out on Wednesday 25 August on Rue du Tonkin in Villeurbanne resulted in the seizure of a cache of drugs, a firearm and cash.
Police officers on a surveillance mission had detected suspicious activity around a storage unit. A strong smell of drugs emanating from the premises led the authorities to carry out a search.
According to a source close to the case, the seized items were as follows: 52 grammes of cannabis, 24 g of herbal cannabis, 16 g of cocaine, 51 g of ketamine, 100 g of MDMA and 47 g of heroin. Also seized were a revolver accompanied by around forty cartridges of .357 Magnum calibre and €1,500 in cash.
Two men aged 24, who were reportedly not from the local area according to available information, were arrested at the scene and taken into police custody. An investigation is underway.
This seizure comes in a context of sustained pressure on dealing points in the Lyon metropolitan area. On 17 August, Antoine Guérin, prefect delegated for security, made a visit to the Grandclément neighbourhood — two days after an exchange of gunfire that led to the arrest of five suspects, including two teenagers.
"Over the past year, we have shut down fifteen dealing points," he said at the time. "We are fighting relentlessly against these networks that are organising themselves and competing with each other."
The prefect is also counting on fixed-penalty traffic offences (AFD), the amount of which has just increased from €200 to €500 for drug users. "We are going to harass and hammer the buyers," he stated, noting that the number of AFDs has increased by 24 per cent since the start of the year in this sector.
