An individual possessing French and Moroccan nationality, who has been on the run since 2019, was captured on Monday in the Al Hoceima region, in the north of the kingdom. Law enforcement suspects him of being responsible for a killing committed on a street in the 10th arrondissement of Paris six years ago.
The arrest was carried out by investigators from the local judicial police, at the direction of Morocco's interior intelligence services (DGST), according to a person close to the case cited by 20 Minutes.
The incident had occurred on 19 July 2019. A male victim had been fatally struck by gunfire. After the shots were fired, the suspected shooter had concealed his pistol in a rubbish bin before disappearing.
Since that evening, the man had evaded French justice. Two search warrants had been issued against him, in late 2019 and then in spring 2020, by the DGSN and the DPJ for murder. He also appeared on the list of foreign or dual-national fugitives that Rabat believed could be found on its soil.
This arrest coincides with an official visit by French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to Morocco next week. Eleven government members will accompany him, including Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. The latter is to meet his Moroccan counterpart Abdelouafi Laftit. The extradition of the suspect to France so that he can be tried on national territory will likely be part of the discussions, according to the source close to the case.
