Paris City Hall has carried out a wave of suspensions affecting personnel supervising out-of-school activities. Since the beginning of the year, one hundred and thirty-two activity leaders have been removed from their posts. Among them, fifty-two have been suspended in connection with allegations of sexual or sexist violence. This information was revealed on Tuesday by Emmanuel Grégoire, the capital's new chief magistrate, during a visit to a school situated in the north-west of the city.
The Paris out-of-school sector has been experiencing a severe crisis for several months. Numerous reports targeting municipal employees have emerged. In some cases, individuals targeted by these accusations have been remanded and placed in custody.
In April, Anne Hidalgo's successor had already presented an action scheme funded with twenty million euros. The right-wing opposition had then judged this sum insufficient, demanding fifty million to properly conduct the fight against these abuses.
During his address on Tuesday, Emmanuel Grégoire also announced the establishment of an independent enquiry commission. This body will be chaired by Antoine Garapon, a former magistrate specialised in juvenile justice. The mayor indicated that the latter would have full latitude to examine the situation and make recommendations.
