A man at the wheel of a stolen car died during the night from Saturday to Sunday after refusing to stop at a checkpoint by the anti-crime brigade (BAC) of Toulouse, according to sudouest.fr. Two people in the struck vehicle were hospitalised and a gendarmerie investigation has been opened.
Around midnight, a BAC patrol spotted a suspicious Volkswagen in the Basso-Cambo district. A check of the stolen vehicle database confirmed that the car had indeed been stolen.
Ordered to stop, the driver refused and accelerated sharply. A chase ensued through the Toulouse conurbation, marked by excessive speed and dangerous manoeuvres.
The flight ended in the municipality of Seilh. While attempting to overtake on the left, the fleeing driver struck a vehicle coming in the opposite direction head-on. His car went into a skid and crashed into a ditch. The driver died instantly.
The damage to the vehicle ahead was severe. The driver, a woman in her fifties, was seriously injured and stabilised after grave concerns for her life. Her passenger was less badly injured. Both were evacuated to Purpan hospital.
The investigation has been entrusted to the Beauzelle gendarmerie.
