Gendarmes arrested four people on Tuesday as part of a heroin trafficking operation directed by an inmate at Saint-Mihiel, including three individuals in the Colmar region and one at the penitentiary centre.

A coordinated operation by law enforcement resulted on Tuesday in the simultaneous arrest of four individuals involved in a drugs network. The arrests took place in Colmar (on the rue des Trois-Châteaux and rue de la Forge), in Wintzenheim, and at the Saint-Mihiel detention centre in the Meuse, where the alleged mastermind of the operation was held.
The latter, a Wintzenheim resident in his twenties, is currently serving a sentence behind bars. His criminal record already includes seven convictions, some for offences related to narcotics. He is said to have directed the trafficking operation from his cell.
Investigators did not provide details on the quantities seized or the exact role of the three other suspects arrested in the community. The case illustrates the persistence of the phenomenon of remote control of drug networks from within penitentiary facilities.
