Two inmates ran a drug network from Amiens prison
Two men in their thirties, both already incarcerated for drug trafficking, were apprehended on Tuesday in their respective cells as part of two separate investigations, ici.fr reports. One was held at the remand centre in Amiens (Somme), the other at the one in Laon (Aisne). Both are suspected of having continued to run drug trafficking networks in Amiens from their place of detention over a period of several months.
The arrest of the first was carried out by Amiens police's investigation unit, directly in his cell. That of the second was conducted by the narcotics unit at Laon remand centre. Both men will remain in detention pending trial scheduled for the coming days.
Seven other people taken into custody
Alongside these two arrests in prison, seven other people were taken into custody outside. In the first case, a single man in his forties was arrested outside the prison. A search of his home made it possible to seize thirty kilogrammes of merchandise, principally cocaine, as well as several thousand euros in cash.
In the second case, it was primarily delivery drivers, aged 20 to 30, who were apprehended and taken into custody.
Encrypted messaging to communicate with the outside
The investigations, conducted over several months, progressed notably thanks to the analysis of the mobile phones of the people apprehended, which allowed law enforcement to trace back to the two inmates. One has been incarcerated since September, the other since 2023. Despite their imprisonment, they maintained their activities through their mobile phones, using encrypted messaging applications such as Snapchat.
One of the two men further took advantage of his temporary release permits to go directly to dealing points and supervise his affairs in person. He was observed on several occasions in this regard by investigators.
