During the night of Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 July, around 4 o'clock in the morning, an incident paralysed the railway network in Cher. One or more individuals attempted to steal cables belonging to SNCF, causing a complete halt to services between Vierzon and Saint-Pierre-des-Corps.
The incident occurred on chemin des Terres du Verdin, in immediate proximity to a level crossing. The alleged perpetrators first cut through a wire fence. They then seized signalling cables, tied them and dragged them several metres along the tracks, before leaving them in place without removing them.
This intrusion led to the disabling of the two level crossings in the commune of Vierzon situated on the Tours route. As a safety measure, the railway operator decided to suspend all services on this section. Approximately twenty trains were affected by this interruption. Replacement coaches were put into service from the morning onwards. Trains were diverted via Aubrais station in the Loiret department.
Restoration of service is expected around 18 o'clock on Sunday. SNCF technicians were present on site early in the day to carry out a diagnosis of the damage and undertake repair work.
Law enforcement opened an investigation to shed light on this incident and identify those responsible.
