A 32-year-old man, residing in Prades, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment by Perpignan magistrates' court, according to ici.fr. The facts date to Sunday 9 August: the defendant had refused to comply with a police check in the area of Perpignan's exhibition park, triggering a pursuit.
In an attempt to stop the vehicle, a police officer used a baton to puncture the front tyres. The driver nonetheless continued before braking abruptly, causing a collision involving the two police cars pursuing him. Five police officers were injured in the crash.
Taking advantage of the confusion, the driver fled on foot, crossing the D900. Shortly afterwards, a witness handed police a bag containing 200 grammes of cocaine, claiming that the fleeing man had thrown it from his vehicle's window during the pursuit.
The man then went on the run for nine days before voluntarily presenting himself at Perpignan police station. The vehicle he was driving on 9 August belonged to him and was properly insured.
His criminal record showed eleven previous convictions, including two for refusals to comply with police, and two periods of imprisonment of 18 and 36 months. Perpignan magistrates' court sentenced him to three years' imprisonment at the conclusion of the hearing held on Friday.
