Three suspects remanded in custody following investigation into jihadist WhatsApp group

The national counter-terrorism prosecutor's office (Pnat) announced on Saturday 5 September the charging and placement in provisional detention of three men suspected of preparing a departure towards the Islamic State organisation in Africa and/or a violent action targeting the Jewish community. According to France Info, the suspects had been arrested as early as the previous Tuesday and placed in police custody before being remanded in custody during the night from Friday to Saturday.

The investigation had been opened in July by the Directorate-General for Internal Security (DGSI), which had been monitoring for two months the activities of members of a WhatsApp group called "soldiers of Allah". The investigations carried out in this context led to the arrest of the three individuals.

On Friday, the Pnat opened judicial proceedings for terrorist criminal association, leading to the designation of an investigating judge. The prosecutor's office had then requested the charging of the suspects as well as their placement in provisional detention, measures which were ordered during the following night.
