The juvenile court in Chaumont is examining on Wednesday a murder case that has shaken public opinion. A 14-year-old boy is being prosecuted for killing Mélanie, a 31-year-old member of the educational staff, at the entrance to Françoise-Dolto middle school in Nogent, in Haute-Marne.
The tragedy occurred on 10 June 2025, at the moment when gendarmes were carrying out a surprise inspection of school bags outside the school. The victim died from multiple stab wounds. The third-year pupil was apprehended at the scene shortly after the incident.
The teenager's background was already a matter of concern: two disciplinary measures had been taken against him for assaults on fellow pupils. During questioning in custody, he showed no remorse and explained that he had chosen his target at random among the supervising adults.
Being a minor under 16 years of age, the defendant cannot be tried by a juvenile assize court. The juvenile jurisdiction is therefore competent, with a maximum sentence of twenty years' imprisonment. The victim leaves behind a five-year-old child and was decorated with the Legion of Honour after her death.
In an interview with TF1 Info, Evan, Mélanie's stepson, described a woman who was "always smiling" and "incredible", always ready to help. He expressed his desire to hear an explanation, even though he knows it will change nothing. He also said he hoped for a sentence of life imprisonment without parole, although the law does not permit this in this case. The defendant's lawyer made no statement before the hearing.
