Grenoble magistrates' court has delivered its decision concerning a former guard at Varces penitentiary, according to Place Gre'net. The magistrate imposed a sentence of three years' imprisonment, of which two years were suspended.
The accused, freshly graduated from the National School of Penitentiary Administration (Enap), allegedly began by introducing a simple parcel of pasta. The offences subsequently escalated considerably. In total, he reportedly smuggled into the establishment nearly ten kilogrammes of cannabis, around forty mobile phones, as well as narcotics, cigarettes, hygiene products, foodstuffs, gaming consoles and performance-enhancing substances.
The investigation had been launched following an anonymous denunciation. Gendarmes were able to observe on several occasions exchanges of bags intended for prisoners. Detainees holding positions as auxiliaries subsequently took charge of redistributing the goods inside the facility.
The young officer allegedly received approximately 10,000 euros in exchange for these services, according to information gathered by investigators. This case illustrates once again the difficulty faced by correctional establishments in curbing internal trafficking.
