In the night of Tuesday 14 to Wednesday 15 July 2026, a municipal police officer from Le Pontet fired on a motorist who was trying to escape a traffic stop. The incident occurred around 2:30 in the morning, in the vicinity of Avignon, in Vaucluse.

The local prosecutor's office, cited by Agence France-Presse, confirmed the facts first reported by La Provence and Le Dauphiné Libéré. Teams from the municipal police of Le Pontet had intercepted the vehicle during a road surveillance operation. The driver then sought to flee, which led one of the officers to use his service weapon.
